After a Relapse

You did the work. You surrendered in the morning. You went to the meeting. You called your accountability partner.
And you fell anyway.
Now it's the next morning, and the voice in your head has a verdict ready: What's the point? I'll never be free. Maybe I'm just one of the ones who can't get free.
Stop. That voice is not the truth. I want to talk to you. The man who is trying and keeps relapsing anyways.
The Lie in the First Five Minutes
Here's what you need to understand about the moment after a fall. The fall is not the most dangerous part. The five minutes after the fall is the most dangerous part.
Your mind starts racing and the enemy is now shoving your sin in your face. The very lust he wanted you to be enticed by and fell by. Is now the shame he wants you to wade in, like a bath in mud.
Because the enemy stopped tempting you and started accusing you. The temptation said, "Go ahead." The accuser says, "See what you are." And the accusation is the bigger weapon, because temptation only wants tonight. Accusation wants the whole war. It wants you to quit.
A man can survive a thousand falls. What kills him is the day he believes the fall is who he is.
Pray, knowing that the enemy is the accuser not the Lord.
“Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God." Revelation 12:10
St. Maximilian Kolbe

St. Maximilian Kolbe, a man who walked into a starvation bunker so another man could live, who knew more about spiritual warfare than any of us ever will, left us the exact instruction for this moment. He said it plainly: when you feel guilty, do not let the devil deceive you by allowing him to discourage you. Never let him discourage you.
Read that again. Maximilian Kolbe didn't say avoid guilt. Real guilt over real sin is healthy. He said don't let the enemy weaponize that guilt into discouragement, because discouragement is where he actually wins. The fall is a wound. Discouragement is the infection. He is telling you to refuse the infection.
This is a saint who stared down Auschwitz telling you that the most spiritually dangerous thing in your life right now is not your lust. It's your despair about your lust.
You Are Not Doing It Wrong. You Are in the Middle.
Let me say something that might offend the part of you addicted to instant results.
Doing the work and still falling is not failure. It's the middle of the story.
Think about Frodo. He carried the Ring all the way to Mount Doom, did everything right, walked the entire road, and at the final moment he could not throw it in. He failed at the one thing he set out to do. And the mission was still completed. The grace still came through. The mountain still fell.
Scripture says it more bluntly than I can: the righteous man falls seven times, and rises again. Not the righteous man never falls. The righteous man rises. Seven times. (Prov. 24:16) The righteousness is in the rising, not the not-falling. You have been measuring your holiness by whether you stay down. God measures it by whether you get up.
Peter denied Christ three times after three years of walking with him in person. He got the keys to the Church anyway. Not because the denial didn't matter, but because he wept, returned, and let himself be restored. The difference between Peter and Judas was not the size of the sin. It was that one came back and one didn't.
What To Do
Name it as sin, not as identity. Say it: "I sinned." Not "I am a failure." One is true and leads to confession. The other is a lie and leads to the next fall.
Forgive yourself. This is the weapon men leave in the armory. Shame is what got you here in the first place. Have patience. How would you address someone else with your struggle?
Tell your accountability partner. The enemy works in the dark. The fall you confess loses its power. We must learn that our sin is a drop in the ocean of God's mercy.
Do not skip tomorrow's surrender. This is the big one. The morning after a fall is exactly when you'll want to sleep in and avoid God out of shame. Get on your knees anyway. Especially then.
Learn from the fall What happened in the twelve hours before? The fight with your wife, the exhaustion, the boredom, the screen left unguarded. The fall is the symptom. Coach the cause.
That's it. No spiral required. Just the next right step, taken tonight.

The Narrow Way Is Not a Streak
Hear this from someone who has been exactly where you are.
The narrow way is not a streak counter. It's a direction. A man walking the narrow way and a man walking the broad way can both fall in the same mud. The difference is which way they're facing when they get up. One gets up facing home. The other gets up facing further out.
The saints of today are men of hope, who kept their eyes on Christ and not obsessed with their sin. The Church is not a museum of men who never fell. It's a hospital for men who keep getting up.
So get up. Name it, claim it, and tame it. Surrender again. One day at a time.
The enemy wants one thing from you tonight: discouragement. But let's hear Padre Pio on this...
"The Spirit of God is a spirit of peace. Even in the most serious faults he makes us feel a sorrow that is tranquil, humble, and confident and this is precisely because of his mercy. The spirit of the devil, instead, excites, exasperates, and makes us feel, in that very sorrow, anger against ourselves, whereas we should on the contrary be charitable to ourselves first and foremost. Therefore if any thought agitates you, this agitation never comes from God, who gives you peace, being the Spirit of Peace, but from the devil." -St. Pio of Pietrelcina
